Wheel offset is the distance in millimeters from the center line from a wheel to the mounting surface. If the mounting surface is closer to the surface of the wheel it is known to have a positive offset and if the mounting point is closer to the inside of the wheel it has a negative offset. Center or no offset is when the mounting point is directly in the center of the wheel.
Backspacing Wheel Are:
Wheel backspacing is the distance in inches from the mounting surface to the inside edge of the wheel. The width of the wheel originates from the mounting point of the tire beads, therefore the width of the wheel measured from the outside edge to the outside edge is about one inch wider than the specifications. 8 “wheels will measure 9” from side to side, this makes the offset conversion to backspacing not so straight forward. If the 8 “wheel has a middle offset, backspacing is not 4”, it’s actually 4.5 “.

Wheel width will affect the width of the tire by 1/10 “on each side for 1/2” changes in wheel width. This is a small problem unless you plan to run wheel width that is far outside the manufacturer’s recommended range. If you plan to stretch the tire, or run a wider wheel width than the width of the tire, then you must remember that the visualizer shows the tire position not the wheel position.
